An 'education' in style

Whatever your memories of your school days, good or bad, there is definitely something quite cool about vintage school furniture, equipment and materials. It has a very utilitarian feel and is also very easy to get hold of from the likes of ebay and car boot sales....

I love these 'Canteen Utility' chairs from Very Good & Proper which were featured in the January edition of Elle Decoration....

Other great school furniture can be found at Pedlars, these great little 1960's American school desks are so cute!

H is for Home also have this traditional table with a lifting tabletop.... but it is also worth a look on ebay as there is always a few similar to this on there...

Check out The Old Cinema and Pedlars for great school style storage solutions.... old lockers and filing cabinets....

Ebay is such a great resource for some vintage educational posters such as these.... I think these would look great grouped together in frames.....

The Peanut Vendor has some great educational charts and maps..... a huge map of the world can look great on a large wall space.

Or perhaps add a few small touches with items such as science measuring cylinders or apothecary jars to the bathroom, blackboards in the kitchen for lists & notes, or a vintage abacus displayed anywhere....

search ebay for similar measuring jars, car boots sales & markets, or Anthropolgie also had some recently....

this globe is from Pedlars, but again easy to pick up anywhere...

handheld blackboard from Labour & Wait.

freestanding blackboard from H is for Home.

Vintage abacus's also from H is for Home.

I especially love these images from Factory 20 - of their collection of old chemistry bottles....

obviously the key to this trend is not to overdo it! You don't want your front room to look like a school house! but one or two items will subtely give a sense of this style....
is there any other items from school you could see working well in your home? let me know!

thatched roofs, Aga's and a lot of charm....

what exactly makes the 'Perfect English Cottage'? Well a new book of this name from Ryland Peters and Small looks at this idea, and visits many interesting people's homes throughout the book.

It gives some lovely background info on the owners and the houses themselves and with great photography by Jan Baldwin, it makes for a beautiful book for anyone who dreams of either living in a quirky cottage in the country or just needs inspiration to create this style in a urban home....

One of my favourites from the book is a lovely 16th century cottage in the heart of Cornwall, it has been lovingly restored from almost derelict, and has the perfect mix of old and new, I adore this green range, next to the sleek grey cupboards...

There is a real mix of cottages in the book, whether you prefer the true traditional style of a tiny cottage with low ceilings, or something that gives a more modern twist on the country cottage style...

Quick, add it to your Christmas list asap!

Let it Snow!

So it looks like we might have some snow in London tomorrow! eek! I'm so pleased to say my new goose down and feather duvet turned up in the nick of time, I was sure I'd would wait up with frostbite one of these mornings! So in honour of the imminent snow, some cute letterpress cards from We Heart Paper at Etsy....

St George's Market visit - Belfast

If you ever find yourself in Belfast on a Friday or Saturday you should definitely spare some time to visit St Georges Market. Housed in a building built over a century ago, there is a great atmosphere, smells to tempt your tastebuds and lots of interesting characters!

On a Friday morning they hold a variety market which is a mixture of food, antiques, bric a brac, books and clothes. On a Saturday it is mainly food with some art and craft stalls mixed in....

While I was there on the weekend I of course did not have my camera, but I like some of these images of the types of antiques you might find at from the market i found on flickr....

I'll just have to make another trip to visit my folks to get to the market on a Friday as I'm sure there would be some great vintage bargains to be found!

Baubles, robins & sequins!

If you read my last post you will know I was looking for a lovely garland to lay on the mantel piece... I found one and today it arrived! and it has definitely added the necessary shimmer and sparkle, as its covered in sequins and beads!

I ordered it from Next (who do next day delivery - although they are not in my good books as my new duvet did not arrive today with the garland like it should have...) but they do have some pretty Christmas decorations.... there is a wreath to match the garland....

I love this delicate bauble...

and I had originally wanted this pre-lit frosted garland, but it was sold out....

I love this quirky take on a Christmas tree.... great if you don't have space or the inclination for a real tree...

and these little outdoor pre-lit twigs are really cute for leading the way to your door!

I'd love to buy more of these for myself, but lets see if they redeem themselves first by delivering my duvet tomorrow before I go out! ;)

oh, and I thought I'd share a few of my own decorations from my tree! These 2 were both given to me as gifts...

and this robin came from the Tower of London gift shop a few years ago, and the bauble came in a pack of 4 from TK Maxx!

I'm taking a few days R&R as things have been so hectic over the last few weeks, so have a great weekend! Mince pies and mulled wine here I come! :)

Christmas class and sparkle!

I now longer feel guilty for talking about Christmas! It is most definitely on its way! And today I'm off to hunt down a tree (its never that easy when you don't have a car - the other half has to carry it on his back!) and hopefully some new decorations! As we've never had a fireplace before until this year, I hope to find a lovely garland to lay on the fireplace, lots of candles and sparkle!
I love these images from Ideal Home & Homes & Gardens - they are so classy and frosty! but with those lovely fires also cosy! x
